Public libraries can re-open to the public with restrictions as part of Stage Two of the relaunch

May 22, 2020

As you likely know, the Government of Alberta has announced the province’s relaunch strategy, Opening Soon.

As part of that strategy, the Government of Alberta is beginning to carefully and gradually lift restrictions imposed as part of the COVID-19 response. Stage One of the relaunch began Thursday, May 14th. Public libraries remain closed to the public right now and should continue to offer virtual services during this time.

Public libraries can re-open to the public with restrictions as part of Stage Two of the relaunch. Stage Two will begin after analysis can be done on the impact of Stage One. We do not have a specific date for Stage Two to begin.

Your public library board likely has many questions about what this means for your staff and patrons. You probably want to start planning now for re-opening when it is permitted.

We want to empower you to know that

  1. your board can choose whether or not to re-open to the public when Provincial restrictions are lifted in Stage Two and
  2. your board can choose what services to offer at that time.

We have put together two documents to help guide you in your decision making and we have attached them in this email:

We are also happy to consult and chat with you/your board about specific questions you may have.

Thank you and keep well,

Diana Davidson
